This program explores films that reflect the themes of grace, friendship, and vulnerability. Each film invites reflection on how goodness, innocence, and love endure in a world that often fails to understand them. These stories offer quiet hope, hidden strength, and glimpses of resurrection.
🎈 The Red Balloon (1956, dir. Albert Lamorisse)
A young boy in Paris finds companionship with a mysterious red balloon. Without words, the film speaks of grace that accompanies, friendship that remains, and vulnerability that rises beyond violence.
🐦 Kes (1969, dir. Ken Loach)
A boy in a harsh Yorkshire town discovers purpose and wonder through training a wild kestrel. A story of escape, dignity, and how even fleeting friendships can give life meaning.
🚜 The Straight Story (1999, dir. David Lynch)
An elderly man travels by lawnmower across states to make peace with his estranged brother. A journey marked by humility, forgiveness, and steadfast grace in the face of old wounds.
🛐 Of Gods and Men (2010, dir. Xavier Beauvois)
Based on true events, Trappist monks in Algeria choose to remain with their Muslim neighbours despite danger. An extraordinary testimony of peaceful witness, vulnerability, and the love that does not run.
🌌 The Tree of Life (2011, dir. Terrence Malick)
A poetic film that intertwines a boy’s memory of his family with meditations on creation, suffering, and God. A visual prayer that honours both beauty and brokenness in the human story.
Each of these films may be used for parish evenings, small group reflection, or personal spiritual growth. Discussion questions and theological reflections can be tailored to suit your community’s needs.
